Finding our way

Paddling along the twisty streams of life, down to the water’s edge

It’s easy to lose our way.

It’s easy even to lose ourselves a little in trying to be what we assume we should be;

what we have been told we are.

Our instincts might be the whisper of God in our heart,

but when the world is shouting loudly and logically, it can be hard to hear.

So, we try to be something, or someone, we’re not.

We look around at what everyone else is becoming and think we need to blend in.

We lose our way.

I know. Because I have always had a tendency to lose myself a little when things veer off-course.

And I have always loved maps.

I had never put the two together. Never clicked.

My map-making is a celebration of place, colour and memory, but also it’s a reminder of how complex we are. There are so many different paths. When we feel we’ve lost our way, we can almost certainly find another way back. Another way to get to where our soul finds a home.

When I started map-making, I didn’t know why. It simply came from a deep-within desire. Mostly, it just felt like joy. I hadn’t considered the irony of someone who has always struggled with direction choosing to make maps a focus of her creativity.
